How To Prepare A Deck Or Fence For Cleaning
Good preparation protects nearby items and helps the cleaning plan match the wood, coating and condition.
Identify The Material And Finish
Wood species, composite materials, paint, stain and sealers can respond differently to cleaning. Weathering and previous coatings should be discussed before the method is selected. Note peeling areas, soft boards and loose fasteners.
Cleaning can prepare a surface for future finishing but it does not repair deteriorated wood.
Clear The Work Area
Move furniture, planters, grills and decorations away from the deck or fence. Secure gates and provide access to the full cleaning area. Point out outlets, lighting, cameras and nearby landscaping.
Items that cannot be moved should be discussed before work begins so the cleaning plan can account for them.
Think About What Comes Next
If the surface will be stained or sealed after cleaning, tell the contractor. The desired finish can affect preparation and timing. Wood needs suitable drying time before many coating products are applied.
Follow the coating manufacturer instructions and make sure the surface is ready before refinishing.
Set A Clear Scope
Walk through railings, stairs, posts, gates and both sides of the fence when accessible. Identify areas with heavy buildup or previous coating failure. A complete scope helps prevent missed sections and surprises.
No Pressure SoftWash can discuss deck cleaning, fence cleaning, wood brightening and stain preparation needs.
